For the past several years, literacy practitioners across the province have continually requested more professional development and resources to support numeracy facilitation in their programs. In direct response to this request, Metro Toronto Movement for Literacy (MTML) hosted the workshop, “Facilitating Numeracy: An Introduction,” developed and delivered by Tom Ciancone in August 2001. The purpose of the project was to develop an approach for contextualizing the teaching of numeracy in adult literacy and workforce literacy environments. This report uses an approach that sees numeracy as social practice and adopts a holistic way of learning.

This manual is part of Bridging the Employment Gap for Learners with Low Level Literacy Skills, a two-phase project begun in 2001. Phase 1 of the project focused on students with the lowest level literacy and basic skills, especially the developmentally challenged population. In Phase 2, the focus was expanded to include all Essential Skills Level 1 learners. This project involved the development of job-specific sector manuals that include step-by-step learning activities for selected tasks in specified sectors. All the activities have been aligned to the Essential Skills and to the selected National Occupation Classification profiles.
There are six manuals in the series: Clerical, Grounds Maintenance, Janitorial, Kitchen Help, Retail, and Ready for Work.
The Clerical binder will help individuals who may have the opportunity to work in an office setting. It includes six main units: Safety, Collating, Photocopying, Preparing Envelopes for Mailing, Taking Phone Messages, and Making Telephone Calls. This manual should be used in conjunction with Ready for Work, a manual that addresses the "soft skills" common to many jobs.

It includes seven main units: Safety, Understanding Hazardous Product Labels, Tools and Fasteners, Lawns and Gardens: Tasks and Tools, Lawnmowers, Flower Gardens, and Communicating on the Job. This manual should be used in conjunction with Ready for Work, a manual that addresses the "soft skills" common to many jobs.

This manual should be used in conjunction with Ready for Work, a manual that addresses the "soft skills" common to many jobs.

There are, however, many non-sector-specific job-related skills needed by all employees. Ready for Work is the resource that has been developed to address these needs. Ready for Work should be used as a complement to the other five sector manuals: Clerical, Grounds Maintenance, Janitorial, Kitchen Help, and Retail.
The Ready for Work resource binder has three main sections: Essential Skills, Student Units, and Evaluation. The Essential Skills section includes a description of the nine essential skills and examples from the National Occupation Classification Profiles. The Student Units section is divided into "Before Applying for the Job" and "On the Job." The Evaluation section includes checklists for the student, employer and support worker.

A Supplement to the Adult Education Resource Guide and Learning Standards
This article suggests that learning standards are key to raising outcomes in education, and are vital in helping to prepare adult learners -- whether displaced workers, individuals in need of their high school equivalency, or non-English speaking immigrants -- for today's world of work. The author then provides information about the Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) learning standards, which help meet the needs of a wide range of adult learners in terms of educational and employment-related gains. The CDOS standards are: Career Development; Integrated Learning; Universal Foundation Skills and Career Majors. Links to additional, related resources are provided for further information.

This is a report of a conference on women's learning, education and training in Canada which took place March 2-5, 2000 and was hosted by the Canadian Congress for Learning Opportunities for Women (CCLOW), in collaboration with the National Women's Reference Group on Labour Market Issues (NWRG). The conference brought together a diversity of women from across Ontario and the rest of Canada to discuss the status of women's learning, education and training in this country and to strategize for the future.
The aim of the conference was to examine the current status of women's learning, education and training in Canada, and the continued role of a national organization addressing these issues. Six overarching theme areas were identified: Learning, Work and Gender Equity; Technology and Women's Learning; Women's Literacy Education; Learning and Trauma; Older Women and Learning; Supporting Women's Learning
