3. Awakening the Giant Within: Reflections on Strategies for Recruiting Francophone Adults to French-Language Literacy Programs (2008)

Awakening the Giant Within: Reflections on Strategies for Recruiting Francophone Adults to French-Language Literacy Programs Double-A conformance, W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0

Summary

By: Célinie Russell

The purpose of this study was to discover strategies for encouraging adult francophones with poor literacy skills to articulate a need for literacy training and strategies that education centres can use to answer that need adequately. A literature review identified several obstacles to participating in adult education programs: a lack of interest in adult education, a very low value placed on education, and a belief that the expected payback from adult education does not justify the effort it requires. A literature search identified the one-stop access approach and integrated training programs as two possible ways of overcoming obstacles to participation in adult education and providing the types of training that are in greatest demand.

Handbook For Facilitators

By: Wendy Magahay

The AWAL Guide: Handbook for Facilitators is essentially “AWAL in a box.” The background information, suggestions, and resources collected here are intended to provide you with the tools and support you need to understand, plan for, deliver, and benefit from an AWAL Workshop for your organization.

AWAL (Applications of Working and Learning) is a valuable and effective program that can result in strong benefits for both faculty development and curriculum resource development. Through meeting with and learning from employers and employees, AWAL provides a means for educators to incorporate into their own teaching practice an emphasis on the skills that Canadian workplaces have identified as essential.

However, AWAL is not intended to provide a complete examination of a job, and certainly not of the people who do those jobs.

To address this gap, Dofasco created its Essential Skills Program. Since 1997, hundreds of employees have developed skills that have made marked contributions not only to their work, but also to their personal lives and communities. This case study looks at various aspects of this successful workplace learning program, including the program's background and objectives, target groups, learning activities, challenges, keys to success and benefits.

8. Bare Essentials: An Introduction to Essential Skills (2008)

Bare Essentials: An Introduction to Essential Skills

By: College Sector Committee for Adult Upgrading (CSC), Community Literacy of Ontario (CLO), Continuing Education School Board Administrators (CESBA), Ontario Native Literacy Coalition (ONLC)

This report grew out of a project entitled Provincial Partnerships to Promote Essential Skills: Motivation, Process and Outcomes. The partners agreed to focus on an Essential Skills resource for frontline practitioners and they developed a manual for that purpose. Originally, the focus was on developing a workshop that could be presented in venues appropriate to each of the project partners. However, after further discussion, it was agreed that the workshop format would limit the number of people who could benefit from it.

The document includes a history of literacy in Canada, leading up to the development of Essential Skills. Other chapters explain literacy and Essential Skills in the Canadian context and set out how Essential Skills connect to adult literacy. One chapter discusses how Essential Skills profiles can be developed for jobs included in the National Occupational Classification while a subsequent chapter focuses on tips for using such profiles in employment services to learners and clients, upgrading programs and career research. The final chapter includes tips and resources for using Essential Skills as learning opportunities.

The document also has a number of appendices, including a glossary of abbreviations and acronyms, an Essential Skills and levels comparison chart and a set of tips for using the National Occupational Classification to find ES profiles.

Essential Skills for Life, Learning and Work, National Version

By: Jeannette Ruby, Tracey Kelly, Krista DeMerchant

This publication is related to Human Resources Development Canada's Applications of Working and Learning (AWAL) project, a national, professional development project for educators. It is part of a student-focused bilingual AWAL project that was developed as a way to bring the Essential Skills research, not just to teachers, but also to students. This project involved developing a classroom resource that exposes students in Grades 7-12 to the theory behind the Essential Skills so that this language becomes meaningful, informative and commonplace. In its design, the resource ensures that students will not just hear it and speak it; they will live it and experience it through continued, deliberate, and explicit practice and application.

This student-focused AWAL resource book was designed as a graduated AWAL experience for students in Grades 7-12. It is divided into four sections: introductory, beginner, intermediate, and expert.
